Ozempic: The Wonder Type-2 Diabetes Weight-loosing Drug And Its Side Effects

One of the most popular GLP-1 drugs is Ozempic. Hailed as a "miracle drug" by high-profile celebrities, Ozempic, whose weight-loss effects have gone viral on social media, was originally prescribed to help combat type 2 diabetes. WHAT IS OZEMPIC? Ozempic, the trade name of semaglutide (made by Novo Nordisk), is an injectable once-weekly medication approved by the FDA to help adults with type 2 diabetes manage blood sugar.

In Hollywood, Amy Schumer admitted taking it (and berated celebrities who lie about it); Kathy Bates says it only helped her lose the last 20 lb of her 100-lb transformation; Chelsea Handler said she sampled it unknowingly; Khloé Kardashian has denied using it.

IS IT SAFE? Possible side effects: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain and headaches; some users report losing the pleasure of eating (altered taste); in rare cases it can induce acute pancreatitis (Diabetes UK); Novo Nordisk warns of reduced kidney function; a July 2026 study found GLP-1 users more likely to develop non-scarring hair loss (alopecia), though uncommon at an estimated 3-9 people per 1,000 users yearly.

A 2024 Journal of the American College of Cardiology study of 17,600 overweight heart patients found those on a 2.4 mg semaglutide dose had a 33% lower chance of dying if they contracted COVID-19, plus a 29% reduction in deaths from non-heart-related causes. According to UK NICE, Ozempic can help people reduce weight by more than 10%—but only combined with lifestyle interventions like a low-calorie diet and increased activity.
