Would You Buy A Chinese Car Or A Used Toyota For The Same Budget?
This is becoming an interesting question for Nigerian buyers. Let us say you have the same budget. Would you prefer: A newer Chinese car such as BYD, Changan, Geely or Jetour or an older used Toyota, Honda or Lexus? From what we see in China, Chinese cars are improving very quickly in terms of: * Technology * Interior quality * Fuel efficiency * Hybrid systems * EV range * Safety features In many cases, the same budget can buy you a much newer Chinese vehicle compared with a Toyota or Lexus.
But Nigerian buyers also have very practical concerns: * Spare parts * Resale value * Mechanics who understand the car * Long-term reliability * Charging for EVs * Battery replacement cost This is why I do not think there is one answer for everyone. For someone using the car personally in Lagos or Abuja, a newer Chinese hybrid may make sense.
For a dealer who is more concerned about resale speed, Toyota may still be easier.
We are currently seeing more Nigerian buyers asking about Chinese EVs, PHEVs and hybrids directly from China, so I am curious: If you had the same budget today, would you choose a newer Chinese car or an older Toyota/Lexus?
And why? Interested to hear the experience of people already driving Chinese cars in Nigeria.
