Nigeria Is Creating Wealth. But Who Is Actually Getting Richer?
Something has been on my mind lately. You see the stock market going up. Property prices are going up. Land prices going up. And you hear people talking about wealth creation. But wealth for who? Take two Nigerians earning roughly the same salary. One has been putting some money into shares and maybe owns a piece of land.
The other has been using his salary to sort out rent, food, transport, electricity and family responsibilities.
Now shares and property prices go up. The first person's net worth can increase significantly. For the second person, nothing much changes. If anything, life may have just become more expensive. Na the same Nigeria, but two very different experiences.
It got me thinking that maybe the real divide isn't just between people who earn more and people who earn less. Maybe it's increasingly between people who own assets and people who don't.
Because if you don't own the asset, its price going up doesn't automatically make you richer. So I'm curious: Can someone starting with an ordinary salary, without inherited property or family wealth, still realistically build serious wealth in Nigeria today? Would like to hear what people think.
