I recently saw someone who bought a Redmi device and they complained it didn't come with Play Store because it was a Chinese version. People advised him to install one certain G app which would enable him to install play store. It was my first time of hearing such. So I became curious, consulted AI and it was very helpful. I hope you learn as much as I did: 1. WHAT IS A 'CHINESE VERSION'?
Manufacturers make regional versions (China, Global, India, European/EEA, Japan, Indonesia, Russia). A China-version Redmi is NOT automatically a fake - it can be an authentic Xiaomi/Redmi. 2. WHY A CHINESE VERSION MAY NOT HAVE GOOGLE: China-market Android phones generally do not ship with GMS, Play Store and the Google ecosystem; they use Chinese app stores. 3. WHAT ELSE CAN DIFFER: software/ROM and languages, Google services, pre-installed apps, 4G/5G bands, SIM/eSIM config, NFC, camera/hardware configs, plug, warranty, update channels.
4. CHINA VERSION VS CHINA ROM: China hardware+official China ROM = genuine Chinese-market phone; China hardware+Global ROM = software changed; Global hardware+official Global ROM = normal international version. 'Global ROM' does not necessarily mean 'Global version'. 5. RESELLER/CUSTOM ROMs: may create problems with updates, security, banking apps, Play Protect, DRM/Widevine, stability, warranty.
Seeing Google Play doesn't prove genuine Global version. 6. Manual Google install differs from a phone certified for international market. 7. Nigerian vendors legitimately import China-market phones; the problem is presenting China version as Global version. 8. WHAT TO ASK: original Global hardware or China version? Was Global ROM factory-installed or flashed? Exact model number?
Bootloader unlocked? Play Protect certification? Network bands? The exact MODEL NUMBER is key. 9. NETWORK: SIM working doesn't prove correct regional version - check supported bands. 10. Chinese version is NOT fake - genuine China-market, genuine Global, and counterfeit are three different things. 11. Many brands do this: Xiaomi/Redmi, Samsung, HONOR, OPPO, vivo, OnePlus, realme, Huawei, Motorola, ZTE, Lenovo.
Huawei is a special case. 12. BUYER'S PREFERRED ORDER: BEST official Global version+official Global ROM; acceptable genuine China version+official China ROM if understood; risky China hardware+reseller Global ROM; avoid unknown custom ROMs; counterfeit is a completely different problem. 13. A phone has separate identities: BRAND > MODEL > REGIONAL HARDWARE > SOFTWARE/ROM > ROM MODIFICATION > GOOGLE STATUS.
Calling a phone simply 'original' doesn't tell you all of them. 14. THE BIGGEST LESSON: A phone can be genuine China version / genuine with modified ROM / genuine Global / fake. Establish exact model, regional hardware, official ROM, Google certification and network compatibility before paying. If you want normal Google, don't buy a China version merely because the seller says 'we'll install Google' - buy the correct regional version from the beginning.
