I Discovered Something About Saving Money That Scared Me
I recently realized something about saving money that honestly scared me. There was a time I desperately needed a new phone, but I couldn't seem to save enough money. I had an old account that I couldn't easily access because of an issue with the account. At first, it was frustrating.
Then I realized something strange. Because I couldn't easily touch the money, I stopped spending it.
I kept putting money there. Eventually, I reached the amount I needed, sorted out the account issue and got the phone. And the feeling when I finally got that phone was different - I genuinely felt like something had saved me from myself.
That's when I started thinking: maybe sometimes the problem with saving isn't that people don't know how to save - maybe it's that their money is too accessible.
We have savings apps. We have locked savings. We have reminders. But what if there was something even stricter? Imagine you're saving N500,000 for rent.
You commit the money to a system and say: 'This money is for my rent.' You cannot withdraw it halfway. When you finally reach N500,000, the system pays your landlord directly. Same thing for school fees, business equipment, a phone, professional tools, etc. Would you use something like this?
And be honest: would you willingly give up access to your own money if it meant you were far more likely to actually achieve the goal? That is much stronger validation.
