Can Local Chickens Really Make Money In Nigeria In 2026?
Good day farmers. I recently started paying more attention to local chickens because of their market demand and the possibility of reducing production costs through controlled free-range feeding. But I want to approach this with actual numbers instead of assumptions. Let's calculate the economics together: cost of buying one local chicken, feed consumed per bird, cost of feed, vaccination and medication, mortality, labour, selling price, final profit per bird.
Farmers currently keeping local chickens, please share your actual figures: how much did you spend per bird, how long did you keep them, what weight did they reach, how much did you sell them for, and what feeding system are you using (free range, semi-intensive or intensive)? I will keep updating this thread with my own records so we can see whether local-chicken farming makes economic sense in 2026.
(A reply breaks costs into startup vs operating: operating cost + allocated housing/equipment cost + mortality = real production cost, compared against number sold x average price.)
