[Video: Behind the Scenes - Installation, Testing & Energisation of a 150MVA Transformer at Afam - Aniekpeno Akpan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpik4ArO8CY] A transformer does not simply arrive at a substation and get switched on. Before a 150MVA transformer becomes part of the power grid, there is a long chain of engineering work behind it - installation, mechanical assembly, oil processing, electrical testing, protection checks, functional verification and countless smaller details that have to be right.
This was the journey of the newly installed 150MVA LEEEC Autotransformer (330/132/33kV) at Afam. From the early installation stages to the final successful energisation, the project represents another important addition to the transformation capacity of the Afam transmission network. With the transformer now in service, it will support power transfer between the 330kV and 132kV networks and contribute to improved capacity and reliability for power delivery to Port Harcourt and its environs.
This is a glimpse into what it takes to turn a transformer in pieces into a working part of Nigeria's power grid.
