Ogun Declares Thursday Public Holiday For Isese Day

Ogun State Government has declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year's Isese Day celebration. A statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, says the declaration is part of the administration's efforts to preserve and promote Yoruba culture, heritage and traditional values. The state government recalled that August 20 was formally recognised as a public holiday in Ogun in 2023, following a resolution of the State House of Assembly and the approval of Governor Dapo Abiodun.

According to the statement, Isese Day offers adherents of the Yoruba traditional religion an opportunity to honour their ancestors, observe traditional rites and promote the values embedded in their cultural and spiritual practices. It adds that the celebration also promotes community spirit and enables the wider society to appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.

The Ogun State Government says the observance further reflects its recognition of the role of culture and traditional institutions in preserving the state's identity and promoting social cohesion. It therefore urged residents to celebrate the occasion peacefully and responsibly, while respecting the beliefs, rights and practices of others. [Photo attached]
