Roman Slepcsik: Nearly 30 Years In Canada, Now Facing Deportation

NEARLY 30 YEARS IN CANADA, NOW FACING DEPORTATION. Imagine building your life in Canada for almost three decades, only to face removal from the country you have called home for so long. Roman Slepcsik came to Canada from the Czech Republic in 1997 seeking refugee protection; he was accepted as a refugee and became a permanent resident in 1999. But years later, his repeated trips back to the Czech Republic became the centre of an immigration case: Canadian authorities determined that his return trips and use of his Czech passport showed that he had voluntarily re-availed himself of the protection of his home country.

As a result, his protected-person status was ceased, and he lost his permanent resident status. He now faces removal from Canada after spending more than two decades building a life there. The case has raised important questions about what happens when a former refugee returns to their country of origin years after receiving protection in Canada. What do you think about this case?

Should someone who has lived in Canada for decades be at risk of losing permanent residence because they returned to their home country? Share your thoughts respectfully. Source: https://www.instagram.com/p/DcPSIkGGLCJ/?igsi=MXN0ejdtaXRmMGlndw==
