FG To Give Students 100MB Free Data Daily From October 1

The Federal Government has announced that Nigerian students will start receiving 100MB of free data daily from October 1 under a new initiative aimed at improving access to digital learning. The programme, known as the Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content Initiative, was unveiled by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, during its official launch in Abuja.

According to the minister, the scheme will initially benefit about five million students, giving them free access to approved educational websites and digital learning platforms without paying for data. Alausa said the initiative is designed to help students, particularly those from low-income families and underserved communities, overcome one of the biggest barriers to online learning: the cost of internet access.

The programme will first cover students in senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions, with plans to expand it to other categories of learners in the future. The Federal Government said only approved educational platforms that meet national curriculum standards will qualify for the free-data programme. Authorities also plan to monitor usage to ensure students are using the service for learning purposes.

The initiative is being implemented through a partnership involving the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Federal Ministry of Education, telecommunications operators and other stakeholders. Officials believe the project could significantly expand access to online education and digital skills training across the country, especially as schools increasingly rely on technology-based learning resources.
