A video making the rounds online shows a Nigerian police officer removing the rear number plate from a black Lexus SUV. In the 41-second video, the officer is seen using a screwdriver to unscrew the number plate, NEN-663AM, registered in Anambra State. As the officer works on the plate, the driver repeatedly asks why it is being removed and what offence he has committed. He tells the officer that he is being recorded and also asks him not to scratch or damage his car.
The driver also says he has a tinted-glass permit but has lost it, apparently trying to explain his situation to the officer. Despite the driver's questions, the officer does not give an explanation in the footage and continues removing the plate. The video does not show what happened before the recording began, so it is unclear why the Lexus was stopped in the first place or what offence the officer may have suspected.
The footage therefore leaves one major question: was the officer legally authorised to remove the number plate, or was he going beyond his powers? For now, the short video alone does not provide enough information to give a definite answer. Source: gtvdaily.com; video: youtube.com/watch?v=vx28QD9tlYM
