The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards took place on 14 September at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay — the first Emmys host in nearly two decades not primarily known for comedy. It was a night of genuine history: three separate records broken, and one stubbornly intact. Widow's Bay and The Pitt Apple TV's freshman horror-comedy Widow's Bay finished the season with 14 Emmys, the most ever won by a comedy series in a single year.
It took Outstanding Comedy Series along with writing, directing and both supporting acting categories — Kate O'Flynn and Stephen Root. The Pitt repeated. HBO Max's medical drama won Outstanding Drama Series for the second consecutive year and took Lead Actor for Noah Wyle, finishing with six wins in total. It had gone in with 25 nominations, more than any other program.
