September 17th 2026 Chelsea Football Club has confirmed that Todd Boehly is leaving his role as chairman after selling his ownership stake, with majority owner Clearlake Capital now assuming full control of the Premier League club.
The club said affiliates of Clearlake Capital Group will acquire Boehly’s interest. As part of the same transition, Clearlake will also buy Mark Walter’s stake. Swiss investor Hansjörg Wyss will remain a stakeholder and partner in the ownership group. Chelsea said there will be no changes to day-to-day operations, leadership or strategy.
Boehly, who became chairman after the 2022 takeover from Roman Abramovich, issued a statement marking the end of his tenure.
“It has been an honour to serve as Chairman of Chelsea Football Club,” he said. “I would like to thank the many who helped secure a bright future for the Club, including the English Premier League, the coaches and players, the talented leadership and staff at Chelsea, and the legions of dedicated fans.”
He added that he had valued his partnership with Clearlake and the wider ownership group, as well as “the collective decisions and investment we have made to support the immediate and long-term success of the Club.” Boehly said he was confident Chelsea was “well positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership.”
Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano thanked Boehly for his contribution, saying he would “always be a part of the Chelsea story and family.” They said the firm’s focus would remain on investment in infrastructure, sporting performance, player development and long-term success for the club and its supporters.
Boehly and Walter had been part of the consortium that bought Chelsea in 2022. Reports put the latest transaction at around £950 million for their combined holdings, with the club valued at about £5 billion including debt. Talks followed a reported rift inside the ownership group.
Boehly also co-owns the Los Angeles Dodgers. His departure ends a four-year spell as the public face of Chelsea’s post-Abramovich era.
