Floyd Samba has announced himself on the senior football stage in spectacular fashion, scoring twice on his Manchester City debut as the reigning Carabao Cup holders defeated Norwich City 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
The 17-year-old academy product was one of 10 changes made by manager Enzo Maresca following City's Manchester derby victory, but he quickly ensured that the night would be remembered for his breakthrough performance.
A Dream Start Samba opened the scoring in the 29th minute, reacting quickly inside the penalty area to meet Allan's cross with a composed header.
His second goal was even more impressive. Early in the second half, the teenager collected the ball and curled a superb effort into the net to complete his brace.
Rayan Cherki, Allan and fellow academy graduate Ryan McAidoo also found the net as City comfortably progressed to the fourth round.
Samba was subsequently named Player of the Match, capping a remarkable first senior appearance.
From Academy Prospect to First-Team Star The midfielder has spent almost a decade at Manchester City's academy, joining at Under-9 level. Although naturally a midfielder, Maresca surprisingly deployed him as a central striker against Norwich.
That decision paid off immediately.
Samba had already impressed during the previous campaign, recording 17 goals and six assists across 24 appearances in six competitions. He also scored a hat-trick in Premier League 2 and played a key role in City's FA Youth Cup triumph. His versatility, technical ability and eye for goal have made him one of the academy's exciting prospects.
A New City Star in the Making? Samba's debut inevitably brings attention, but the teenager will need time and patience as he adjusts to senior football.
His immediate task is to continue developing and take advantage of opportunities when they arrive. City's academy has already produced players such as Phil Foden and Rico Lewis, and Samba now has an opportunity to follow a similar pathway.
For the teenager, however, the priority is simple: keep improving.
Finally A two-goal debut at 17 is an extraordinary way to introduce yourself to Manchester City's first team.
Samba described the experience as "mind-blowing," but also acknowledged that it is only the beginning of his career.
If his first appearance is any indication, Manchester City may have another exciting academy talent ready to make his mark.
