Judith Chichi Okpara was quietly born on the 12th of July, 1971, in Umuduruebo Ugiri-ike LGA, Imo State — the south-eastern part of Nigeria. Nothing unusual happened on that day. It was announced that the birth was a girl, and probably, her mother and family celebrated as they should normally do. It is possible a fortune-teller must have foretold that she would be a famous person in life.
She had a very decent and quiet childhood. She went to school like other kids, played with sand and clay, and participated in other sensory activities that were in vogue at that time. Nothing significant was known about her as she grew in the land of the rising sun.
The career path of acting found her as a teenager, but according to reports, she lost interest in it. Nigerians love education, especially when guardians are exposed. Judith took the normal route most Nigerian children would take educationally. She went to school and gained an associate degree in Office Administration. She was ready for a conventional life. She later got married and had two children — she was ticking all the boxes of a typical life.
Not much was known about her. Reports have it that she starred in some films, namely ‘Destructive Instinct’, ‘How Did I Get Here’, ‘Ordeal in Paradise’, ‘Dwelling in Darkness and Sorrow’ and ‘The Goose That Lays the Golden Eggs’. She was rumoured to have played other minor roles in some Hollywood projects. She hardly grabbed the headlines with her engagements. Something was brewing inside of her, and it was going to be explosive.
Judith had a strong desire to be successful. She didn’t want to live a normal life. She wanted to be in the news and become an icon in a novel section of the entertainment industry. Her means of achieving her dream looked dark, and it must have been difficult for her to share with people. Someone was in her way, and that was her husband.
In 2005, she joined her husband, Elumelu Mazagwu, in the United States, and things fell apart. One thing about relocating abroad is that it has a way of exposing the cracks in marriages which have been concealed by the local settings in Nigeria. Many believe the Western environment empowers women and gives them a strong voice, which might not go down well with men. It is worse for those who have a mentality of patriarchy and are not liberal enough to adapt to the new reality.
For those who have bullied their wives in Nigeria and have gotten away with it, she might turn around abroad for vengeance. The reasons behind the marriage collapse between Elumelu Mazagwu and Judith Chichi Okpara remain unknown, but the marriage crashed in just two years.
Judith became free like a bird. It was time to achieve her deepest heart desires and grab the bag.
Judith became wild. She adopted the name Afrocandy. She started singing, songwriting, modelling, acting, movie directing and production. She became the founder and CEO of Invincible Twins Productions LLC. And the big one: she ventured into adult movies.
She released a song titled ‘Ikebe Na Money’, which glorified prostitution. She recruited some unknown Black men in the US to sleep with her in movies. She posted lewd content on her social media platforms. Nigerians were shocked. This had never happened before. Adult movies were seen as a Western idea, and it was unusual for a Nigerian woman who was supposed to be so cultured to be involved.
Afrocandy got the attention she wanted; millions of views came, but they came with vicious hate and anger from her followers. People would consume her content and leave negative feedback. She spent much of her time replying to vile comments and blocking thousands of her followers on social media.
Afrocandy was bold, resolute, determined and undeterred in her quest to make money from adult content. She tried her best, but her number one enemy was time. Afrocandy started her adult-content career around the age of 37, which is the normal time when most of her industry colleagues would be retiring. Initially, what gave her attention was the shock value of her actions. Over time, that disappeared.
Motherhood, age, life stress and lifestyle had taken a toll on her heavily tattooed body. She wasn’t attractive to watch, considering the options available in the industry. She struggled to keep up with the quality of entertainment offered by her competitors.
Afrocandy soon lost relevance, and since then, she has remained in the background, probably regretting her life choices quietly. She appears to be working as a fireguard/security officer or practising medical billing and coding specialist, as a day job, depending on the source you want to believe.
The mind-boggling question remains: how did a normal girl without any scandals or outrageous anti-social behaviours suddenly develop the impetus to strip unclad before the camera and have sex? She never had a track record of such behaviours, or maybe she was just very discreet.
