An old report by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on Peter Obi’s administration in Anambra State has resurfaced online amid the ongoing debate over debts allegedly left behind by the former governor.
The report, dated November 8, 2013, stated that Obi’s administration had paid ₦1.2 billion to Anambra pensioners, bringing the amount committed to clearing pension arrears owed since 1996 to ₦33 billion.
The screenshot of the report has now attracted attention on social media as the Anambra State Government and Obi continue to disagree over the state’s financial obligations.
The current administration led by Soludo has alleged that Obi did not clear all inherited salary, pension and gratuity arrears before leaving office in 2014. It specifically cited outstanding obligations involving former Water Corporation workers and other legacy arrears.
Obi, however, has maintained that his administration systematically cleared historical arrears and left office without outstanding salary, pension or gratuity obligations. He recently said more than ₦35 billion had been used to clear historical gratuities and arrears.
The resurfaced NTA report has therefore become part of the wider online conversation, with some users pointing to it as evidence of payments made during Obi’s tenure, while the present Anambra government continues to maintain that some legacy liabilities remained after he left office.
