Sore Throat At Night? 5 Home Remedies You Can Use Right Now (and 2 To Avoid)

You go to bed fine, then wake up at 2am with a scratchy, burning throat that hurts every time you swallow. Sore throats often feel worse at night because the air is drier, mucus drips down the back of your throat when you lie flat, and there's nothing to distract you from the pain. Most are caused by viruses and settle within a few days. Here's how to ease it at home: 1. Warm salt water gargle Salt helps draw out swelling and loosens thick mucus.

Mix half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, gargle for 15 to 30 seconds, then spit it out. Don't swallow it. Repeat every few hours. It isn't recommended for young children who can't gargle safely. 2. Honey in warm water or tea Honey coats the throat and soothes irritation, and studies suggest it can help calm coughs too. Stir one to two teaspoons into a warm (not hot) drink.

Never give honey to a baby under 1 year old. 3. Ginger tea Ginger has a warming, soothing effect and may help reduce inflammation. Slice a small piece of fresh ginger, steep it in hot water for 5 to 10 minutes, and sip slowly. You can add honey once it has cooled a little. 4. Steam from a warm shower Warm, moist air soothes a dry, irritated throat and helps loosen mucus. Sit in a steamy bathroom for 10 minutes before bed.

If you use a bowl of hot water instead, be careful, because steam burns are common. Keep your face at a safe distance and never let children do it alone. 5. Water, rest, and a rested voice A dry throat hurts more, so sip water through the day and keep some by your bed. Talk less, don't shout or whisper strongly (whispering strains the voice), and sleep with your head slightly raised on an extra pillow to reduce drip and dryness. 2 things to avoid: Buying antibiotics from a chemist without a prescription.

Most sore throats are viral, and antibiotics won't work on them. Taking them wrongly also helps bacteria become resistant, so they stop working when you truly need them. Gargling or swallowing strong concoctions. Undiluted antiseptics like Dettol, alcohol, native gin mixtures, or very hot pepper can burn the throat and make things worse. Some are dangerous if swallowed. When to see a doctor: Go to a clinic if the sore throat lasts more than a week, or if you have a high fever, trouble swallowing or breathing, drooling, swollen glands, white patches on your tonsils, earache, a rash, or blood in your saliva.

Sore throats in small children need extra care, so get them checked early. This is for education only and not a diagnosis.
