Tragedy In Delta: NDLEA Officer Drowns Chasing Drug Suspect Into River

A tragic incident has been reported in Obiaruku, Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, where a suspected officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reportedly drowned while pursuing a suspected drug offender into the Ethiope River.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Saturday during an operation to apprehend suspected drug offenders. One of the suspects allegedly jumped into the river while being taken towards the Ethiope River Bridge in an attempt to escape. The officers reportedly entered the river in pursuit of the suspect.

While one of the officers was rescued and taken to a hospital for medical attention, another officer reportedly drowned during the operation. The suspected offenders were also said to have escaped through the river.

The body of the officer was later recovered from the river. Community sources further reported that traditional rites associated with drowning incidents in the area were performed before the remains were released to the relevant authorities.

The incident has raised concerns over the risks law enforcement personnel face during operations, particularly when suspects attempt to escape through dangerous waterways. Authorities are expected to provide further details regarding the identity of the officer, the circumstances surrounding the incident and the ongoing efforts to apprehend the suspects.
