How Idembia, Ancestral Headquarter Of Ezza, Fell In 1906
Many Ezza people don't know this part of our history.
Idembia is the ancestral town of all Ezza, founded by Okpoku, son of Ezekuna. According to family record we had 12 Ezes who ruled from Okpoku till 1906.
In 1906, British officers from Abakaliki led soldiers to Ezza because Ezza people refused to pay tax and blocked road to Afikpo. The town was stockaded (had wall). British burnt it. This is what we call the fall of Idembia.
During that burning, an important sacred box from Okpoku shrine was taken. That box is today in British Museum store in London. It was registered in 1907. British Museum has not displayed it since.
What many don't know is that it was not only British that recorded it. Germans who were in Mamfe, Cameroon border that time also recorded it as Ezza uprising.
French Holy Ghost Fathers in Afikpo also recorded that Idembia was destroyed and Ezza people scattered. Even American missionaries in Unwana recorded refugees coming from Ezza after the war.
So the fall of Idembia in 1906 was known internationally at that time.
Our people who ran left Idembia and founded other settlements. That is why till today Idembia remains important in Ezza memory.
I am currently in Sao Paulo, Brazil gathering documents about this event to write a petition for our heritage.
If you are from Idembia, know that your town was once the capital of Ezza kingdom before 1906.
Ezaa!
