The world is looking for practical solutions. Certification is good, and it is necessary.
But if your certification cannot help you solve real-life problems, then there is a challenge.
Be careful not to allow certification to complicate matters for you. Education should equip you to create value, solve problems and make a meaningful contribution to society.
My strong advice to young people is this: learn practical skills.
As I write this, I am a practically skilled man. By profession and practice, I am a painter, POP installer, furniture designer, and interior and exterior finishing expert, among other things. I personally handled the epoxy flooring at the National Hospital Abuja after COVID-19.
These are skills I didn't just learn from a classroom. I learned them through practice, experience, mistakes, discipline and solving real problems.
Our learning institutions should place stronger emphasis on technical and vocational skills—carpentry, mechanics, engineering, plumbing, fashion, electrical work, construction, artificial intelligence mastery, practical financial literacy and other skills that solve real-world problems.
Many of us didn't learn how to make, manage and multiply money until the realities of the marketplace forced us to learn.
We cannot continue with an education system that is predominantly “A for Apple” or 2 × 2 while the world around our children is becoming increasingly practical, technological and competitive.
Let us prepare our children not just to pass examinations, but to solve problems, create value and build sustainable livelihoods.
Certificates can open doors. Practical skills can create solutions. We need both.
