Before you rush to buy drugs for every small problem, check your kitchen first. Here are 40 simple remedies for minor, everyday issues: COUGH, COLD & THROAT Salt water gargle: Mix ½ teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and gargle for 30 seconds. It reduces swelling and soothes a sore throat. Honey in warm water: Honey coats the throat and calms coughing. Never give it to babies under 1 year.
Lemon, honey and warm water: A good drink when a cold is starting. It soothes the throat and keeps you hydrated. Ginger tea: Slice fresh ginger, boil for 5-10 minutes and sip. It's warming and soothing for throat irritation. Steam inhalation: Breathe in steam from warm water with a towel over your head. It loosens a blocked nose. Be careful with very hot water. Pepper soup: The heat helps clear a stuffy nose and the warm broth keeps you hydrated.
Turmeric in warm milk: A comforting evening drink when you feel a cold coming. Warm fluids: Water, tea and broth keep your throat moist and help loosen mucus. STOMACH & DIGESTION Ginger for nausea: Sip ginger tea or chew a small piece slowly. Mint tea: Helps relieve bloating and gas. Pawpaw: Rich in fibre and water, so it helps with constipation. Beans, vegetables and whole grains: Fibre keeps your bowel movements regular, so eat it daily, not just when you're stuck.
Warm water in the morning: A glass on an empty stomach helps get your digestion moving. Ripe banana: Gentle on the stomach and replaces some of the potassium lost during diarrhoea. Plain rice, bread or light pap: Bland food gives an upset stomach time to settle. Homemade ORS for diarrhoea: Mix 6 level teaspoons of sugar and ½ level teaspoon of salt into 1 litre of clean water.
It replaces lost fluids and salts. This matters more than any drug. Plain yoghurt: Its friendly bacteria can help your gut recover after a stomach upset. Baking soda for heartburn: ½ teaspoon in a glass of water can neutralise stomach acid occasionally. Don't make it a daily habit. Cinnamon tea: A warm, calming drink for a bloated, uneasy stomach. MOUTH & TEETH Warm salt water rinse: Helps mouth ulcers heal and keeps the area clean.
Avoid spicy food meanwhile. Clove for toothache: A clove placed near the painful tooth gives temporary relief. It does not fix the problem, so see a dentist. Baking soda rinse: A pinch in water helps freshen breath. Cold milk or yoghurt for pepper burn: Dairy neutralises the burning better than water does. Ice chips: Let them melt slowly on painful mouth sores to numb the area.
SKIN & EYES Cool running water for burns: Hold a minor burn under cool running water for 10-20 minutes. Never apply toothpaste, butter or oil, because they trap heat and raise the risk of infection. Coconut oil: Good for dry skin and chapped lips. Oatmeal bath: Oats soothe itchy, irritated skin. Add them to a lukewarm bath. Baking soda paste for insect bites: Mix with a little water and apply to reduce itching.
Don't scratch. Cucumber slices: Cool and refreshing on tired eyes or sun-stressed skin. Cornstarch for heat rash and chafing: It keeps the skin dry and reduces friction. Cold, used tea bags: Place on tired eyes for 10 minutes to reduce puffiness. Diluted vinegar foot soak: 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water helps reduce foot odour. Skip it if you have open cuts. Soap and clean water for minor cuts: Rinse, wash gently, then cover with a clean bandage.
Don't put pepper, toothpaste or powder on wounds. ACHES, SLEEP & GENERAL Warm compress: Relaxes tight, aching muscles. Ice pack for sprains: Apply for 15-20 minutes at a time, with a cloth between the ice and your skin. Rest and elevate the limb too. Warm milk before bed: A calming routine that can help you wind down. Water first for headache: Dehydration is a very common cause, so drink a full glass and rest in a quiet room before reaching for drugs.
Watermelon and oranges: Great for hydration and vitamin C, especially in hot weather. A spoon of sugar for hiccups: Swallow it dry and slowly. It works for many people. Lemon water: An easy way to drink more water through the day. ⚠️ Important: These are for minor, short-lived problems. A fever that lasts beyond 2-3 days, blood in stool, severe pain, difficulty breathing, or symptoms in babies and pregnant women need a doctor or a lab test, not home treatment.
