KING SUNNY ADÉ AT 80 — 60 YEARS OF MUSICAL EXCELLENCE
Today, September 22, 2026, we celebrate an extraordinary icon of African music — Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Adé — KSA — the King of Juju Music.
Born on September 22, 1946, King Sunny Adé began his musical journey in the 1960s, forming the Green Spots and later building the legendary African Beats.
For six decades, he has transformed the sound and spectacle of Nigerian music — pioneering the use of the pedal steel guitar, expanding the role of electric guitars, synthesizers and talking drums, and creating a sound that carried Yoruba Juju music from Nigeria to the world.
In 1982, his landmark album Juju Music, released through Island Records, introduced his extraordinary sound to a massive international audience. His follow-up album, Synchro System, earned him his first Grammy nomination in 1984. He received another Grammy nomination for Odu in 1999 — making him one of Nigeria's pioneering Grammy-recognised artists.
But King Sunny Adé was never just about the music.
His legendary dance steps, his commanding stage presence, the shimmering guitars, talking drums and the energy of his African Beats turned every performance into a celebration.
From the stages of Nigeria to America, Europe and beyond, KSA made African music a global experience.
And after six decades, the King is still performing.
At 80, the crown remains firmly on his head.
Happy 80th Birthday to the one and only King Sunny Adé — the King of Juju, the Minister of Enjoyment, and a living legend of African music.
80 years of life. 60 years of music. A lifetime of enjoyment.
Long live the King! @MODS FP pls front page, lets celebrate baba
