Battery life has become one of the most important things to consider when buying a premium smartphone. A powerful camera, bright display and fast processor are great, but they do not mean much if you are searching for a charger halfway through the day.
That is where the iPhone 18 Pro Max makes an interesting case.
Apple has given its biggest Pro iPhone a larger battery, a more efficient A20 Pro chip and improvements designed to reduce power consumption. The result is the longest battery-life rating Apple has ever given an iPhone.
For people who spend their days working, streaming, navigating Lagos traffic, taking photos and videos, using social media or simply staying connected, the question is straightforward: how long can the iPhone 18 Pro Max actually last?
Here is what to expect.
## Up to 45 Hours of Video Playback
Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro Max for up to 45 hours of video playback, compared with up to 39 hours on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. It can also deliver up to 40 hours of streamed video playback. ([Apple][1])
Those numbers are Apple's controlled testing figures rather than a promise that every user will get 45 hours between charges.
Still, they give us a useful indication of where the iPhone 18 Pro Max sits. Apple is positioning it as its most enduring iPhone yet.
Apple also says its newer real-world usage model estimates up to 30 hours of use on a full charge for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
That figure is arguably more interesting for everyday users because normal smartphone use is a mixture of browsing, messaging, photography, streaming, apps and occasional gaming rather than continuous video playback.
## The Battery Is Bigger Too
The improvement is not simply down to software.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max has a 5,391mAh battery in models with a physical SIM tray, according to Apple's European energy information. That's a substantial increase over the 4,823mAh battery reported for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
That works out to roughly an 11.7% increase in battery capacity.
It is an important change because the Pro Max has traditionally been the iPhone for people who want the biggest screen and the longest battery life. With the iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple has increased the battery capacity while also working on efficiency elsewhere in the phone.
