One useful question teachers can ask when a student is stuck is:
“What do you already know?”
It shifts the conversation from:
“I can't solve this.”
to:
“What information can I work with?”
Sometimes the first step in solving a difficult mathematics problem is simply helping the student recognise what they already understand.
