“They troll me yet hail those on international platforms” – Toyin Lawani slams Nigerians over their double standard to her designs

Celebrity designer Toyin Lawani has slammed Nigerians over their double standards. Hours ago, Grace Makun posted about the irony of Nigerians drooling over outfits by foreigners yet condemning Toyin for her style. Reacting, Toyin concurred, noting how they troll their own person but praise international brands. She said she has learnt over the years not to blend in and continue standing out.

She said she pats herself on the back and believes in herself. The celebrity designer declared that she will always be a trendsetter. “Sis @fabjewels_official na so life be, When their own person does it, It’s trolling, But when it’s seen on international platforms, it’s hailing, But one thing I sure don’t do is listen to them when they try to make me blend in, It’s ok not to blend in, actually, But it’s Beautiful to stand out, ‘Cause if I did listen over the years when they troll my work, I wouldn’t be where I am today with my ART, At times I see Art I have done years back, Get rebranded and put out in Recent times without adequate credit, I pat myself on the back, Believing in oneself is all that’s needed, Everyone doesn’t have to like it, But it will take you far God blessed me with A foresight I’m never letting go of.

Regardless of who appreciates it or not. Always will be the trendsetter. I have always said this, I design for the world, not the society”. Earlier this year, Eniola Badmus wrote a beautiful note to Toyin, thanking her for dressing her in confidence and making her feel powerful. Eniola said that, beyond her talent, she cherishes their friendship deeply, as Toyin is loyal, kind, hardworking, and full of light.

In a previous post, she shared a video of her before and after, crediting Toyin Lawani for the transformation, which she described as major. Two years ago, social media users made fun of Toyin over her look at AMVCA. The celebrity designer rocked a sack bag to the award ceremony. Explaining why, she said that the devil tried, but he couldn’t stop her as she created the masterpiece in a few hours.

Toyin’s creative work got her recognition from American rapper, Cardi B. The fashion designer had shared a video of the rapper’s daughter rocking one of her outfits, hailing the young star. Toyin, who couldn’t believe her eyes, shared a video of the 5-year-old wearing a hand-painted jacket she designed as she expressed joy at finally being recognised internationally.
