Some Producers Keep Working With The Same Set Of Actors, Why?
Have you ever watched a Nollywood film and thought, 'I've seen these actors together before'? You probably have. Nollywood has a number of producers and filmmakers who seem to have a pool of actors they return to from one project to the next. At first it can look like favouritism, or simply a lack of new faces.
But is that really what is happening? There is a popular saying that when you find your people, you stick with them.
Perhaps that is exactly what this is. In the words of Blessing Uzzi, the filmmaker behind Bluhouse Studios and the AMVCA-winning Freedom Way: 'There's a reason people in Hollywood keep working with the same actors and directors.
Film collaboration is not easy, and when you find your people, you hold on to them.' She was telling her followers, in effect, to expect the same faces across different roles and different projects.
But there is another side to this. If the same producers keep casting the same actors, where does that leave newer faces trying to get their break?
Does it create a reliable creative team, or can it eventually become a comfort zone? Take Funke Akindele. There are certain faces that recur throughout her projects — Timini Egbuson, Uzor Arukwe and Tobi Makinde among them. Of course she works with many other actors, but these are some of the familiar names that have appeared across her films over the years.
Another good example is Ruth Kadiri, who has built recurring working relationships with actors like Maurice Sam, Eddie Watson and Deza the Great.
