10 Ways To Kill Your Career As A Realtor And How To Avoid Them

Real estate can be a rewarding career, but let's be honest: having properties to sell, posting flyers every day, and waiting for buyers to appear isn't enough to build a lasting career.

Sometimes, the things that quietly damage a realtor's career are not the big mistakes. They are the small habits repeated every day.

Here are 10 of them and what to do instead.

Never Show Your Face If all your audience sees are property flyers, they may remember the property but forget the realtor Real estate is a relationship business. Let people see you, educate, speak on camera, share your experience and personality.

Wait for Leads to Find You Posting online and waiting for enquiries is not prospecting. Reach out, Network, follow up, and start conversations. Social media shouldn't just be a place to advertise properties. It should be a place where you build relationships.

Only Post Properties “500sqm available.” “Inspection Saturday.” Eventually, your page begins to look like a property catalogue. Educate your audience, explain real estate terms, answer common questions, Share lessons and useful information. When people consistently learn from you, you become more than a salesperson.

Take Every Rejection Personally A prospect says no and suddenly you start wondering whether real estate is for you. Not everyone is ready to buy today. Learn from rejection without allowing it to define you. A “no” to an offer is not necessarily a “no” to your entire career

Work Only When You're Motivated Motivation is great but it is unreliable. If you only prospect, create content or follow up when you feel motivated, your results will probably be inconsistent. Build routines and discipline.

Never Follow Up “I'll get back to you.” “Okay” and that's the end of the conversation. Sometimes, the prospect wasn't saying no. They were simply busy, distracted or still considering their options. Follow up professionally, Provide useful information and keep the conversation open without pressuring the person.

Talk More Than You Listen One of the easiest ways to lose a potential client is to spend the entire conversation talking about your property without understanding what they actually need. Ask questions, Why are they buying?Where do they want to buy? What is their budget? What is their timeline? What concerns do they have? Listen first and Recommend second.

Be Afraid to Ask for the Next Step You've answered the questions, sent the pictures and explained everythingThen the conversation ends. Sometimes, you simply need to ask:“Would you like us to schedule an inspection?” You don't have to pressure people. Just make the path forward clear.

Stop Learning Once You Start Making Sales You closed a few deals. Congratulations! You now know everything about real estate. Obviously… until the market changes. The industry, technology, marketing strategies, regulations and customer expectations continue to evolve. Keep learning.

Give Up Too Early You made a few calls, You posted for two weeks, You got several “no” responses, Then you conclude: “Real estate doesn't work.” Maybe the problem isn't real estate, Maybe the strategy needs to change. Review your approach, Improve your communication, Study your audience, Follow up, Learn from your results. Don't confuse consistency with doing the same thing forever.
