Imagine telling an AI assistant, "I need this product," and instead of just showing you a link, it actually completes the purchase for you. That might sound like something from a futuristic movie, but Shopify is already taking steps in that direction. While some major retailers, including Amazon and even Adidas, are reportedly putting up barriers that prevent AI agents from making purchases on behalf of users, Shopify is embracing the technology.
The company announced on Monday (28th of September, 2026) that browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases on Shopify merchants' websites. In other words, AI shopping assistants are no longer limited to helping you find products or adding items to your cart. They can now go all the way to checkout and place the order for you after receiving your approval. To understand how big this is, think about how online shopping works today.
You might ask an AI assistant to help you find a product, compare options, or even add an item to your cart. But when it comes to the final step, payment and checkout, you usually have to take over yourself. Shopify wants to change that experience. The e-commerce platform had already supported WebMCP for storefronts and shopping carts. This allowed AI agents to browse products, search through a store's inventory, and add items to a cart.
Now Shopify has expanded that support to include checkout and Shop Pay, bringing AI agents one step closer to becoming personal shopping assistants. AI agents can now read the checkout page, make updates when needed, and submit the order once the buyer gives authorization. The best part? Shopify says the process does not rely on screenshots or scraping web pages. Instead, the AI agent can interact with the checkout process in a more direct and efficient way.
To make this possible, Shopify introduced three new tools: • get_checkout – lets the AI agent view and inspect the checkout page. • update_checkout – allows the agent to make changes such as updating a delivery address or selecting a different shipping option. • complete_checkout – enables the AI agent to place the order after getting approval from the buyer. Think about it for a moment.
You could tell an AI assistant to find a product, compare prices, select the best option, fill in your delivery details, and complete the purchase. Instead of spending several minutes clicking through pages, the AI handles most of the work while you stay in control of the final decision. This announcement may seem small, but it gives us a glimpse into how online shopping could look in the future.
AI agents are quickly evolving from simple assistants that answer questions into digital helpers that can actually take action. And with Shopify opening the door to AI-powered checkouts, we may be getting closer to a world where buying something online is as easy as having a conversation.
