NELFUND: WHEN DEBT IS MISTAKEN FOR EMPOWERMENT.
Imagine being so hungry for political validation that you celebrate a loan as though the government just shared its national cake with you! You borrow money to survive university, and some people are already shouting EMPOWERMENT! Oga, empowerment ke? You have been empowered to owe! Apparently, all it takes to deceive some people is to put a government logo on a debt and add a little political propaganda.
Suddenly, liabilities become achievements, and repayment obligations become evidence of good governance! Let's be serious for once: If I lend you money and you celebrate me for changing your life, who will you blame when the bill arrives? Helping students access education is commendable. But let's not insult our intelligence by confusing a loan with a scholarship or borrowed money with a gift.
The tragedy is not just that some students may graduate with debt; it's that some people are so busy applauding the lender that they've forgotten to ask about the loan! At this rate, tomorrow, if the government offers us loans to buy food, some people will call it The National Hunger Empowerment Programme.
