GTBank Refuses To Recover ₦977k Unauthorized Debits, Demands Loan Payment - FIJ

GTBank Won’t Help Civil Servant Recover N977,124 in Unauthorised Debits, but It Wants Him to Return N408,215 Anyway

On a sunny Sunday afternoon in September, Adeyinka Lasaki, a civil servant, received a series of debit alerts for transactions on his GTBank account totalling N977,124. The sum included N568,908 from his account balance and a N408,215 loan, all without his approval.

Lasaki narrated his ordeal to FIJ on September 30. “The fraudulent activity occurred on September 20. I tried valiantly to forestall the transaction when I first got an alert on the phone, but I realised that my GT app was not responding to any command and I could not gain access to the GT World platform until the whole dastardly deed was done,” he said.

“I initiated the process to block my account the moment I regained access to the platform, but it was too late. In total, the sum of N568,908.76 was deducted from my account while an additional loan of N408,215.61 was requested for and granted to the assailant during the process.”

FUTILE ATTEMPTS AT RECOVERY Lasaki told FIJ that his efforts to recover the money have so far been futile.

“I had tried to report to FUNAAB branch on September 21, but officers on duty did not take me seriously. I went to other branches as well, but all efforts were rendered abortive,” he said.

“I was told that I’ve received an email concerning their investigation. When I asked them the way out they were telling me that there is nothing they can do again and I should consider the repayment of the loan that I didn’t authorise.”

FIJ emailed GTBank on Friday for a response on the matter. They had not responded at press time.
