Ghana has repatriated 120 Nigerian nationals rescued during Operation Cyberhunt, a crackdown on suspected cybercrime networks involving alleged human trafficking and exploitation.
According to Ghanaian authorities, the Nigerians were trafficked into the country and forced to participate in online fraud operations. They were reportedly rescued from suspected cybercrime centres in the Greater Accra Region.
Authorities have described the 120 Nigerians as victims of trafficking and exploitation, rather than simply treating them as cybercrime suspects. However, individual assessments are important in establishing each person’s circumstances and level of involvement.
The operation, led by Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority in collaboration with local security agencies and international partners, resulted in the arrest of eight suspects and the seizure of 136 mobile phones, 130 laptops, internet devices, four vehicles, jewellery and 10 Nigerian passports.
The eight suspects are being processed for prosecution, while the 120 rescued Nigerians have been returned to Nigeria.
The case highlights the disturbing link between human trafficking and cybercrime, where vulnerable individuals may be lured abroad with false promises and subsequently coerced into criminal activities.
