The NNPP made its position known in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the party’s Founder, Dr Boniface Aniebonam.

“It has come to the knowledge of NNPP leadership that certain individuals, who have been expelled from our fold, confirmed by court judgments and INEC, have been parading themselves as leaders of the party with the intent to extort money from unsuspecting political parties and candidates,” he said.

While describing the party as “independent,” Aniebonam urged anybody or entity that had been “duped” by the impostors to seek a refund from them (the impostors).

“All contestants, coalitions, or political parties who may have been duped should go back to the impostors for a refund of the money paid as contestants’ fees or for alliance.

“The authentic NNPP with basket of fruits logo is not a member of any coalition. It stands to reason that as a national political party, we are independent,” Aniebonam stated.

Speaking at the Boye Nation/JAF Movement Mega Concert in Ibadan, the governor argued that critics should focus on the wider electricity challenges affecting the country.

“’President Tinubu deserves no second term because he once said that if electricity is not fixed, Nigerians should not vote for him’” Makinde stated. Recalling Tinubu’s 2023 presidential campaign, he promised to provide constant electricity and urged Nigerians not to vote for him for a second term if he failed to deliver within his first four years.

Makinde’s remarks came after Oyo State APC governorship candidate Senator Sharafadeen Alli criticised the use of diesel generators for some state streetlights.

The governor maintained that if electricity from the national grid were reliable, states would not need to spend money on diesel to power streetlights. Makinde’s comments have added to the political debate over Tinubu’s record on electricity ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

However, the Presidency has previously disputed interpretations that Tinubu promised Nigerians he would not seek a second term if he failed to fix electricity.
