Simeone Apologises To Ademola Lookman After Playing Him Out Of Position
Nigerian football fans, what do you make of this? Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has reportedly apologised to Ademola Lookman after playing the Nigerian star as a centre-forward against Villarreal. Lookman is not naturally a No. 9. He is more dangerous when he has the freedom to operate from the wing, where he can use his pace, dribbling and movement to cause problems for defenders.
However, Atletico had attacking problems, so Simeone decided to use Lookman through the middle. The result? Atletico Madrid were held to a 2-2 draw by Villarreal. After the match, Simeone reportedly acknowledged that playing Lookman in that position was not ideal and apologised to the Nigerian. This is interesting because Lookman has already shown what he can do for Atletico when used in the right role.
Since joining the Spanish club, he has made a strong impression and was involved in several goals during his first few months. But this season has started differently. Lookman has yet to register a goal or assist in Atletico's opening two La Liga matches, and his positioning has become a talking point.
So, is Simeone getting it wrong? Lookman is one of Nigeria's biggest attacking talents.
We saw what he can do at Atalanta, especially during their Europa League triumph. He is a player who needs space and freedom to attack defenders. Playing him as a traditional striker could limit some of his biggest strengths.
At the same time, Atletico have limited options in attack because of injuries and player availability, so Simeone may not have had many alternatives. Still, if you have a player like Lookman, shouldn't you build your system around his strengths?
What do you think? Should Simeone stop playing Ademola Lookman as a striker and return him to the wing? Or should Lookman adapt and prove that he can also succeed as a No. 9? Let's hear from Nigerian football fans.
