ASUU Authorises 20 Varsities To Begin Strike Process
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has authorised 20 university branches to commence processes for industrial action over the alleged failure of the Federal and state governments to fully implement the 2025 agreement reached with the union. The decision followed ASUU's National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026.
According to reports, the affected university branches were directed to issue 14-day ultimatums before proceeding with industrial action if their demands remain unresolved. The development has since resulted in fresh strike threats from some ASUU branches. At Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, the ASUU branch issued a two-week ultimatum to the Jigawa State Government and threatened to commence industrial action from September 15, 2026, if its demands are not addressed.
Similarly, the ASUU chapter at Sokoto State University has given the Sokoto State Government a two-week window to implement outstanding agreements, warning of industrial action if the issues remain unresolved. Meanwhile, the ASUU branch at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has already commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of the full August 2026 salary to its members.
The latest developments have renewed concerns over possible disruptions to academic activities in some public universities across the country. PADO ACADEMIA Your Trusted Source for Education Updates.
