Introduction
Abdulazeez is a Nigerian student pursuing a career in the legal profession. Associated with Suleja, Niger State, Nigeria, he has progressed through different stages of education, from primary and secondary schooling to specialized studies in law.
Among his family and friends, he was affectionately known as Abba, a name that reflects the personal identity by which those closest to him recognized him.
His academic journey reflects his interest in education, justice, and the principles that guide society. From his early years in primary school to his university studies in International and Common Law, each stage has contributed to his intellectual development and strengthened his ambition to become a legal professional.
One of the most significant chapters of his academic journey began at Maryam Abacha American University of Niger (MAAUN), Maradi, where he continued his legal education and developed a deeper appreciation of the law, its principles, and its importance to society.
My Educational Background
My educational journey began at Supreme International School, Maje, Suleja, and continued at Gamji Heritage Academy, Maje, Suleja, where I completed my primary education. These early years provided me with the foundation upon which my subsequent academic achievements were built.
After completing my primary education, I proceeded to Command Secondary School, Zuma Barracks, Suleja. My secondary school years were an important period of learning, personal growth, and preparation for higher education. During this stage, I studied different subjects and sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO) examinations.
Following my secondary education, I continued my studies at A. D. Rufa'i College of Education, Misau, Bauchi State, where I pursued a Diploma in Law with a focus on Sharia and Civil Law.
This programme introduced me to specialized legal knowledge and gave me an opportunity to develop an understanding of legal principles, justice, legal institutions, and the relationship between law and society. It also helped strengthen my interest in pursuing further studies in the legal field.
My educational journey subsequently brought me to Maryam Abacha American University of Niger in Maradi, where I continued my studies in International and Common Law.
My First Year at Maryam Abacha American University of Niger
My first year at Maryam Abacha American University of Niger was an important milestone in my academic journey. It represented the beginning of a new phase of learning, personal development, and preparation for my future career.
Entering university was a different experience from my previous stages of education. University life introduced me to new academic expectations, new people, different perspectives, and a greater level of responsibility. I had to recognize that succeeding in higher education required more than attending lectures and preparing for examinations. It also required independent reading, critical thinking, discipline, patience, and a willingness to learn continuously.
As a law student, I began to appreciate the seriousness of the profession I had chosen. Studying law requires a person to examine issues carefully, understand legal principles, interpret legal materials, and develop logical arguments. These responsibilities made my first year both a learning experience and an opportunity to understand the kind of professional I aspire to become.
My experience at MAAUN has continued to shape my outlook on education and strengthened my determination to build a future in the legal profession.
The School Environment and University Life
Maryam Abacha American University of Niger, located in Maradi, Niger Republic, provides the setting for an important stage of my academic development. Being part of a university community has given me the opportunity to experience higher education in a new environment and interact with people pursuing different academic ambitions.
University life offers opportunities to learn both inside and outside the classroom. Students develop their knowledge through lectures, personal study, academic discussions, assignments, examinations, and interactions with their colleagues.
For me, the university experience has reinforced the importance of discipline, punctuality, respect, cooperation, and effective time management. I have come to appreciate that students must take responsibility for their education and make a consistent effort to understand the subjects they study.
The school environment also provides an opportunity to build relationships, exchange ideas, and learn from people with different experiences and perspectives. Such interactions are valuable because education is not limited to textbooks or lecture notes; it also involves learning how to communicate, work with others, and approach problems thoughtfully.
My first year has helped me understand that university education is a process of continuous growth. Every lecture, assignment, discussion, and academic challenge offers an opportunity to improve one's knowledge and develop the habits necessary for future professional responsibilities.
The Lecturers and Their Teaching Methods
Lecturers play a significant role in shaping students' understanding of their subjects. A lecturer's ability to explain difficult concepts, engage students, encourage questions, and connect theoretical knowledge to practical situations can influence how students perceive a subject.
During my first year at MAAUN, I came to appreciate the importance of effective teaching and academic guidance. As a student of law, I realized that understanding legal principles requires more than memorizing information. It involves examining arguments, understanding the reasons behind legal rules, and learning how those rules apply to different situations.
Among the lecturers who made a particularly positive impression on me was Barrister U. I. Sulaiman, who taught us Legal Method.
Barrister U. I. Sulaiman and My Experience with Legal Method
One of the most memorable aspects of my first year was studying Legal Method under Barrister U. I. Sulaiman. I genuinely loved his method of teaching, and his approach made the subject more interesting and increased my enthusiasm for legal studies.
Legal Method is a fundamental subject in legal education because it introduces students to the ways in which law is studied, interpreted, researched, and applied. It helps students understand legal reasoning, the use of legal authorities, the interpretation of legal materials, and the methods used to approach legal problems.
Learning this subject under Barrister U. I. Sulaiman was a valuable experience for me. I particularly appreciated his teaching method because it encouraged my interest in the subject and helped me recognize the importance of understanding the law rather than simply memorizing it.
His teaching made me appreciate the intellectual side of legal education and understand that law requires patience, careful analysis, logical reasoning, and the ability to support arguments with relevant legal principles.
This experience also showed me how much influence a lecturer can have on a student's academic journey. When a subject is taught in a way that captures a student's interest, it can inspire the student to read more, ask questions, and develop a stronger desire to understand the subject.
For me, Legal Method became more than just another course to study. It became an important part of my growing appreciation of the legal profession. My experience with Barrister U. I. Sulaiman strengthened my love for law and encouraged me to take my studies more seriously.
I value the role his teaching has played in my first-year experience because it helped me see the importance of legal knowledge, reasoning, and the proper application of legal principles.
Associate Professor Zahraddeen Mohammed Bello, the Faculty Dean
Another important figure in my university experience is Associate Professor Zahraddeen Mohammed Bello, the Faculty Dean.
The position of Faculty Dean carries significant academic responsibilities, including providing leadership within the faculty, supporting academic standards, and contributing to the effective organization of teaching and learning. The Dean's role forms part of the wider academic structure that supports students as they pursue their studies and prepare for their future careers.
As a law student, I recognize the importance of academic leadership in creating an environment where students can pursue knowledge, develop their abilities, and appreciate the responsibilities associated with their chosen profession.
My experience at the university has helped me understand that legal education involves the contributions of many people. Lecturers guide students through their courses, academic leaders provide direction, and students themselves must remain committed to learning and personal improvement.
Associate Professor Zahraddeen Mohammed Bello's position as Faculty Dean is therefore an important part of the academic environment in which I continue my legal studies.
Together, the lecturers and academic leadership within the faculty form part of the university experience that has contributed to my understanding of higher education and the demands of studying law.
How My University Experience Made Me Love the Legal Profession
My experience at Maryam Abacha American University of Niger has strengthened my love for the legal profession and helped me develop a better understanding of what it means to study law.
Before entering this stage of my education, I already had an interest in legal studies through my Diploma in Law, which focused on Sharia and Civil Law. However, my university experience has given me further opportunities to appreciate the depth of legal knowledge and the intellectual responsibilities associated with the profession.
Studying Legal Method under Barrister U. I. Sulaiman has been particularly influential in this regard. His teaching method increased my interest in the subject and helped me appreciate the importance of legal reasoning, interpretation, research, and the systematic application of legal principles.
Through my studies, I have come to understand that law is not merely about memorizing statutes, passing examinations, or obtaining academic qualifications. It is also about understanding justice, protecting rights, resolving disputes, promoting fairness, and ensuring that legal principles are properly understood and applied.
Law requires a person to think carefully, examine different perspectives, question assumptions, and develop arguments supported by sound reasoning. It also demands integrity, patience, discipline, and respect for the rights of others.
My first-year experience has encouraged me to look beyond the classroom and appreciate the wider responsibilities of legal practitioners. Lawyers have important roles in advising individuals, representing clients, interpreting legal principles, and contributing to the administration of justice.
These lessons have made me more passionate about my chosen profession. They have strengthened my determination to acquire the knowledge, practical skills, and professional values necessary to become a competent and responsible legal practitioner.
I am grateful for the experiences and teaching that have contributed to this growing appreciation of law. They have encouraged me to remain committed to my education and to approach my studies with greater seriousness and purpose.
Studying International and Common Law
My studies in International and Common Law represent another important stage of my academic development.
International Law concerns legal principles governing relationships among states and other relevant international actors. It addresses issues such as international agreements, human rights, diplomatic relations, and cooperation between countries.
Common Law is a legal tradition in which judicial decisions play an important role in the development and interpretation of legal principles, alongside legislation and other applicable legal sources.
Studying these areas provides an opportunity to understand different aspects of legal systems and the ways in which law influences individuals, institutions, and societies.
For me, these subjects are important because they broaden my understanding of justice and the responsibilities associated with legal practice. They also encourage me to develop the analytical skills required to understand complex legal issues and approach them systematically.
My earlier studies in Sharia and Civil Law provide another part of my educational foundation. Together, these academic experiences have strengthened my interest in understanding different legal principles and their applications.
As I continue my university education, I hope to build upon this foundation through further study, research, practical experience, and consistent personal effort.
Personal Growth, Friendships, and Student Life
My first year at MAAUN has also been an opportunity for personal growth. University life requires students to become more independent, manage their time effectively, and balance academic responsibilities with their personal lives.
Interactions with fellow students create opportunities to exchange ideas, discuss academic challenges, work together, and develop friendships. These relationships can make university life more meaningful and provide opportunities to learn from the experiences of others.
My experience has reminded me that education involves both individual effort and the ability to learn alongside other people. Listening to different perspectives, respecting others, and communicating effectively are valuable skills that extend beyond university life.
As someone affectionately known as Abba among family and friends, I recognize the importance of personal relationships alongside academic ambitions. While pursuing my education remains a priority, the relationships and experiences that accompany this journey are also part of the person I am becoming.
University life is therefore not only preparing me academically; it is also providing opportunities to develop the maturity, responsibility, and interpersonal skills needed in professional life.
The Importance of My First-Year Experience
Looking back on my first year at Maryam Abacha American University of Niger, I regard it as a meaningful period of learning and development.
The experience has helped me appreciate the demands of legal education, the importance of independent study, and the value of lecturers who make their subjects interesting and understandable. My experience with Barrister U. I. Sulaiman in Legal Method stands out because his teaching strengthened my interest in law and encouraged me to understand legal principles more deeply.
I also recognize the importance of the academic environment and faculty leadership, including the role of Associate Professor Zahraddeen Mohammed Bello as Faculty Dean.
These experiences have contributed to my growing understanding of the legal profession and strengthened my desire to continue learning. They have taught me that becoming a legal professional requires more than ambition; it requires consistent effort, intellectual curiosity, discipline, integrity, and a willingness to improve.
My first year has provided a foundation upon which I can continue building my legal knowledge and professional aspirations.
My Future Ambition in the Legal Profession
As I continue my studies, my ambition is to acquire a strong understanding of the law and develop the skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to society.
I aspire to become a legal professional who understands the importance of justice, fairness, integrity, and respect for the law. I also recognize that reaching this goal will require dedication to my studies, continuous reading, practical learning, and a commitment to ethical conduct.
My academic journey, from primary school in Suleja to my legal studies in Maradi, has taught me that progress is achieved through determination and continuous effort.
The knowledge I gain from my lecturers, the lessons I learn from my university experiences, and the discipline I develop throughout my studies will all contribute to my preparation for the future.
I intend to approach each stage of my education as an opportunity to improve myself, broaden my understanding, and strengthen my ability to meet the demands of the legal profession.
Conclusion
My academic journey has taken me through several stages of education, each contributing to my development and strengthening my interest in law. From my primary education at Supreme International School and Gamji Heritage Academy in Maje, Suleja, to my secondary education at Command Secondary School, Zuma Barracks, Suleja, and my Diploma in Law at A. D. Rufa'i College of Education, Misau, Bauchi State, each institution has formed part of my educational foundation.
