A Nigerian woman has come under fire online after sharing a video showing her reaction after discovering that the okada rider who picked her up was a former classmate. According to the woman, she only realised the rider was her former schoolmate after he had already picked her up. The unexpected encounter was captured on video and shared online, but instead of generating sympathy, it sparked criticism from Nigerians who accused her of looking down on the man because of his job.
One commenter wrote: "Life no balance for everybody. Seeing a former classmate on okada can shock you, but recording and posting it like content is where the problem is." Another questioned what the woman had achieved herself, while others argued that earning a living as an okada rider should not be considered a measure of someone's success. One social media user noted that ridiculing people who are working honestly, especially in a country where opportunities are limited, can contribute to frustration among young Nigerians: "Nigerians with no opportunity or little opportunity like to ridicule hardworking people.
To her, he is not doing well, and you may be shocked that guy has more savings than her altogether." However, not everyone agreed that the woman was actually mocking her former classmate. Daniel Somtochukwu argued that her comments may have been misunderstood, pointing out that she appeared to mention doing POS work herself: "She herself actually wasn't mocking him if I heard her clearly...
I don't see it as she's mocking him because if it is that way she's mocking herself as well for doing POS." The incident has sparked a wider conversation about how Nigerians view certain professions and whether someone's occupation should determine how successful or respectable they are considered to be. For many commenters, the bigger issue was not the woman's surprise at seeing her former classmate on an okada, but the decision to record and publish the encounter as social media content.
