The son of well-known Nigerian Islamic cleric Sheikh Nura Khalid has announced that he is reverting to Islam, weeks after publicly declaring that he had embraced Christianity. The announcement generated wide reactions online after his earlier statement in support of Christianity was widely shared and celebrated by some Christian evangelists and social media users critical of Islam.
In a statement circulating on social media, the young man said he regrets his decision to leave Islam and apologized to his father and to the Muslim Ummah, without giving further details. Weeks ago his conversion announcement went viral, amplified by anti-Islam accounts as evidence of a shift away from Islam; at the time, Sheikh Nura Khalid had publicly stated that his son has been dealing with serious mental-health challenges since birth and urged caution.
Despite that, some Christian preachers invited the young man to crusades and church programmes, presenting his case as a religious victory. Following the reversion announcement, Muslim commentators asked whether those who publicized his conversion would give the same attention to his return: "One person leaving Islam does not destroy Islam. One person returning to Islam does not create Islam."
Mental-health professionals urged caution to protect the privacy of individuals living with mental-health conditions. Sheikh Nura Khalid, a former Chief Imam of Apo Legislative Quarters Mosque in Abuja, is known for outspoken sermons on governance and religious tolerance.
