AllBioHub Media Team Tribute

AllBioHub pauses today — Wednesday, September 16, 2026 — to honour a man who did not simply act in Nigeria's story. He helped write it.

Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs — Chief Olu Jacobs, MFR; the Lion of Lufodo; one of the most complete and consequential artists Nigerian cinema has ever produced — died today at the age of 84. His wife, the incomparable Joke Silva, and their son Olusoji announced his passing to a nation that had long known this day would come, but was not ready for it nonetheless.

He was born in Kano in 1942, in a Nigeria that had not yet found its independence. He grew up watching Hubert Ogunde — Nigeria's theatrical pioneer — perform at the Colonial Hotel, and something lit inside him that never went out. He crossed an ocean to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He worked in British television through the 1970s and 1980s, when the idea of a Nigerian actor building a career in England was not common, not celebrated, and not easy.

He came home. And when he came home, he gave Nigeria everything he had learned abroad — as an actor, as a producer, as an educator, as a co-founder of the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.

He appeared in more than 300 films. He received the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic. He won the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards Industry Merit Award. He was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at AFRIFF in 2021 — the year a false death report circulated about him, and he walked onto that stage as his most eloquent rebuttal.

In 2021, Joke Silva — with characteristic courage and love — publicly disclosed that her husband had been living with Lewy body dementia. It was a disclosure that changed how Nigeria understood both his later years and her faithfulness. She had been fighting for him quietly, without public fanfare, for years. His family's final statement called his life "well lived and fought." Both words matter.

At AllBioHub, we believe the greatest African stories deserve the most careful telling. Olu Jacobs's story — from a colonial-era childhood in Kano, to the stages of London, to over three hundred Nigerian films, to a marriage and a legacy built alongside one of Nollywood's finest — is among the greatest.

We dedicate this tribute to Joke Silva — whose loyalty, love, and grace across these final years has been its own form of greatness. To Olusoji, who announced his father's death with dignity. To the grandchildren who will inherit a name that means something real. And to every fan across Nigeria who sat in front of a television screen and felt, watching Olu Jacobs, that they were watching someone genuinely extraordinary.

The Lion of Lufodo has gone home.

Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs was born on July 11, 1942 in Kano in northern Nigeria. Although his family came from the Egba Alake community in present-day Ogun State, his early years in Kano played an important role in shaping his interest in the performing arts.

This is a detail that captures something essential about his story: he was a Yoruba man from Ogun State, born and raised in the Muslim-majority north of Nigeria, in a city that was one of the country's oldest and most historically layered. Kano gave him a plural, multicultural early formation — an understanding of Nigeria's breadth from the very beginning of his life.

The Night Hubert Ogunde Changed Everything

He became interested in acting after attending one of the annual concert performances of Nigerian theatre pioneer Hubert Ogunde at the Colonial Hotel in Kano.

Hubert Ogunde — musician, playwright, activist, the man widely regarded as the father of Yoruba popular theatre — was on tour. A young Oludotun Jacobs was in the audience at the Colonial Hotel. And something in what he witnessed there — the command of a performer over a room, the power of a story told on a stage — entered him and never left.
