The Black Attendant Painting 1610 - If Britain Respected Africans Then, Why Loot
IMAGE: Compton Verney Gallery - Two paintings side by side. Left: Bishop. Right: Young white lord (1610-1620) with African servant in yellow-orange striped cloth, hat in hand.
Question I saw in the gallery that shocked me:
1610: African man stands inside British palace wearing EXPENSIVE silk, same level as white lord. He is documented, painted, respected. Name not lost.
1907: Same Britain burns Idembia (Ezza), steals Onyi Odu Eze box, labels it Af1907,1111.14 "Unknown idol from Bonny" - erases name, erases kingdom.
297 years difference.
What changed?
1610 Britain had no empire in Igboland, so they could respect a Black man as man. 1907 Britain wanted land and palm oil, so they had to turn Ezza kingmakers into "unknown idol worshippers".
The yellow striped cloth of that 1610 African attendant is same pattern as Ezza AKA OJI title cloth.
The duty of that attendant (holding master's cloak) is same duty as Onyi Odu Eze - keeper of the king's royal box.
Af1907,1111.14 is that royal box.
So British Museum has two Black histories: 1. One they frame in gold in Compton Verney - Black man in 1610 with dignity 2. One they hide in basement as Af1907,1111.14 - Black kingdom box labelled unknown
We ask: Correct the label.
EZZA 5000 YEARS book Chapter 11 drops this comparison with full archive.
Is 1610 respect and 1907 looting not the same Britain?
