Oppression In Islam: Types, Stance, And Teachings

Oppression (ظلم, ẓulm) is one of the gravest sins in Islam, encompassing any form of injustice, wrongdoing, or harm inflicted upon others. Islam’s core message revolves around justice, mercy, and the protection of human dignity, making the condemnation of oppression clear and unequivocal.

Types of Oppression in Islam Oppression Against Individuals: Physical harm, verbal abuse, violation of rights, and unjust treatment.

Oppression in Governance and Society: Tyranny, corruption, unjust laws, exploitation of the weak, and abuse of power.

Economic Oppression: Unfair trade practices, withholding wages, bribery, and exploitation of labor.

Oppression Within Families: Neglect, abuse, and unjust treatment of family members, including children.

Spousal Oppression: Mistreatment, harshness, physical or emotional abuse of one’s spouse, contradicting the principles of kindness and mercy in marriage.

Islamic Stance on Oppression **“Indeed, Allah does not like the oppressors.” (Surah Al-Imran 3:57)

**“And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful].” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:188)

**“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.” (Surah An-Nisa 4:135)

**“And whoever oppresses [another] – We will make him taste a great punishment.” (Surah Ash-Shura 42:42)

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: **“Beware of oppression, for oppression will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection.” (Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Hadith 6251)

He also said: **“Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is oppressed.” People asked, “O Messenger of Allah, it is right to help the oppressed, but how do we help the oppressor?” He said, “By preventing him from oppressing others.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 46, Hadith 6937)

Islamic scholars unanimously regard oppression as a major sin that invites Allah’s severe punishment. Justice (‘adl) is foundational in Islam, and oppression is its antithesis. Scholars stress the obligation of Muslims to avoid oppression personally and collectively, and to work actively to establish justice in all spheres of life—social, political, and economic.

Spousal Oppression in Islam Marriage in Islam is founded on mercy, kindness, and mutual respect. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best of you are those who are best to their wives.” (Tirmidhi)

Oppression in marriage—whether physical, emotional, or verbal abuse—is strictly forbidden. Allah commands us in the Qu'ran:

“And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them – perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good.” (Surah An-Nisa 4:19)

Islam encourages patience, dialogue, and fairness in resolving marital disputes and forbids cruelty or harshness.

Oppression in any form is a serious violation of Islamic teachings. Islam calls for justice, compassion, and respect for all human beings. Whether in governance, society, family, or marriage, Muslims are urged to uphold justice and avoid oppression, knowing that Allah’s punishment awaits oppressors and His mercy is with the just.

May Allah protect us from oppression, guide us to justice, and make us sources of mercy and kindness in our families and communities. Ameen.
