BOOK 3 CHAPTER 1 - Two Crosses at KM 2.4 - Anglican Approved, Catholic Recorded Anger
INTRODUCTION - WHY TWO CHURCHES MATTER:
In 1907 at KM 2.4 Goja Road, there were not 2 witnesses - There were 3:
- Government DC - Ordered fence
- Anglican CMS missionary - Wrote "good progress" - Approved
- Catholic SMA missionary - Wrote "forced, still angry" 8 years later - Recorded pain
Same event, two crosses, two different reports. Why?
DEEPER HISTORY NEVER SEEN BEFORE:
ANGLICAN CMS - ALLIED WITH WARRANT CHIEF AND GOVERNMENT:
- CMS came to Ezaa 1904-1906 with Government - Government gave CMS land for church near Ananqua Native Court
- Warrant Chief Ananqua was CMS convert - Baptised - So CMS protected him
- When DC ordered 45 Omuagu men to build court fence, CMS diary wrote "good progress" because fence helped CMS court and CMS church - CMS benefited
- CMS 1907 needed forced labour to build their own mission house too - So they could not condemn forced labour
- Source pattern: CMS G3 A3/O always writes "progress, chief cooperative, school growing" - Never writes "forced"
ROMAN CATHOLIC SMA - ALLIED WITH OMUAGU KING AND ELDERS:
- SMA came later 1906-1908 to Omuagu side, not Ananqua - SMA mission in Ezzangbo, far from Government court
- SMA priests learned Ezaa language - Lived with elders - Not with Warrant Chief
- Ezaa elders told SMA truth: "We were forced, real power is Omuagu council not Ananqua Warrant Chief" - SMA wrote it 1913
- SMA 1913 burial rite "hoe and machete in grave" - SMA respected Ezaa burial, CMS did not - CMS burial was English coffin
- SMA 1915 wrote "still angry" 8 years after - Means SMA kept visiting Omuagu and saw trauma still there - CMS never went back to Omuagu to check
- Source pattern: SMA 2/Onitsha writes "forced, elders laugh at Warrant Chief, real king is Omuagu" - Always sides with elders
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR KM 2.4 TODAY:
- If you call Anglican priest to bless wall at KM 2.4, you bless the church that approved your grandfathers being forced
- If you call Catholic priest to bless wall, you bless the church that recorded "forced, still angry" and recognized Omuagu king
- That is why CH36 said Catholic not Anglican should bless
NEW RESEARCH FOR BOOK 3 WE NEVER DID:
We need to find:
- Name of CMS missionary at Ananqua 1907 - Who wrote "good progress"? Check CMS G3 A3/O 1907 - Likely Rev. S. R. Smith or T. J. Dennis - Find his photo
- Name of SMA missionary at Ezzangbo 1913-1915 - Who wrote "forced, still angry"? Likely Fr. Joseph Shanahan (later Bishop) - He toured Ezaa 1913 - Find his diary page
- Baptism records: Did 45 men later become Catholic or Anglican? Check 1921 baptism book - If they became Catholic, proves they rejected Anglican Warrant Chief church
