The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria has elected Ifeanyi Okoye, chief executive officer of Juhel Nigeria Ltd., as its 12th president. Okoye was elected at the association’s 54th Annual General Meeting held Wednesday in Lagos. He succeeds Francis Meshioye, who completed a four-year tenure. Okoye founded the Enugu-based drugmaker in 1987. Juhel started production at its permanent site in Emene, Enugu in 1989, expanded into syrups and capsules in 2001, and opened a parenteral manufacturing facility in Awka, Anambra State in 2010.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, and an MSc and PhD in pharmaceutical technology and industrial pharmacy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is a fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, an alumnus of Harvard Business School, and a member of the National Institute. Okoye was conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2012.
He has served on federal committees including the ministerial committee on world-class hospitals and diagnostic centers, and as a member of the governing council of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria from 2009 to 2022. Within MAN, Okoye served as chairman of the Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi branches from 1998 to 2005 and as vice president from 2006 to 2010. His election places a pharmaceutical manufacturer at the helm of the manufacturers’ lobby as the sector grapples with foreign exchange pressures, energy costs and infrastructure gaps.
