On Commitment
I think commitment is a scarier concept than love. Love is scary too, but so is commitment. They work hand in hand, yet people hardly talk about commitment. Love is the driver. It drives you to the station of commitment, drops you there with your luggage, your hopes, your promises, and leaves you to figure out the rest.
know love brought you there. But now that it has left, can you learn to survive the days without it?
Can you still stay when love is no longer loud enough to tell you why you should? Because what happens when the person you chose becomes an entirely different person?
understand seasons. I understand that people change, that life changes, that we must learn the weather of every new season and adapt. That is the normal course of life. But what if a season becomes permanent?
What if the winter stays? What if the conditions become too harsh for you to keep adapting?
what if commitment is exactly that; the willingness to keep learning the language of of a season you never asked to live in? Maybe that is why commitment frightens me more than love. Love asks, “Do you want this person?” Commitment asks, “Can you keep choosing this person when they are no longer the person you first chose?”
And I think that question is scarier than love itself.
