MARRIAGE IS A RESPONSIBILITY, NOT JUST A RELATIONSHIP
Bible Passage
Genesis 2:24 (KJV)
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
THE TEACHING
One of the greatest mistakes people make about marriage is preparing for the wedding without preparing for the responsibility that comes after it.
Many people desire to get married because they want companionship, intimacy, security, children, or someone to share life with. These desires are understandable, but marriage demands more than the desire to have someone beside you.
Marriage is not merely about having a spouse; it is about accepting responsibility for your part in building a healthy home.
A man must understand that being a husband involves more than paying bills or being called the head of the family. He must take responsibility for his conduct, faithfulness, communication, care, and contribution to the well-being of his family.
Likewise, a woman must understand that being a wife involves more than bearing children, preparing meals, or keeping the house. She must take responsibility for her conduct, faithfulness, communication, partnership, and contribution to the growth of the family.
These responsibilities do not mean that one partner must carry every burden. Marriage is a partnership in which both people have duties, and they must learn to work together according to their abilities, circumstances, and God-given convictions.
A responsible husband does not say, “I have provided money, so my work is finished.”
A responsible wife does not say, “I have done my part, so whatever happens to this marriage is not my concern.”
Both must be willing to examine themselves, recognise their shortcomings, and make necessary changes.
When there is a problem, immature partners ask, “Who is to blame?”
Responsible partners also ask, “What can I do to help resolve this problem, and what must I change about myself?”
This does not mean accepting blame for everything or tolerating abuse. Each person must take responsibility for their own actions, while both partners work towards a healthy and safe marriage.
The success of a marriage cannot rest on the shoulders of one person alone. One person can make valuable contributions, but a healthy marriage requires the willingness of both partners to act responsibly.
Before you demand a better husband or a better wife, examine the kind of husband or wife you are becoming.
MORAL LESSON
Marriage becomes healthier when both partners stop treating responsibility as a burden and start seeing it as part of their commitment to one another.
Do not enter marriage only asking what you will receive. Enter it with a willingness to contribute, serve, grow, and build.
