The management of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has launched an investigation into the death of a 22-year-old Post-Basic Nursing student, Taiwo Godwin, who died while receiving treatment at the facility. The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Ajibola Abiola, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, expressing condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, colleagues and the nursing community.
A media report on the incident alleged that Godwin, who had asthma, was rushed to the hospital after experiencing difficulty breathing while playing football. The report also quoted a colleague as alleging that oxygen was not administered to the student despite his deteriorating condition. However, the circumstances surrounding his death have yet to be established. The incident has reportedly raised concerns, as it was said to be the second death of a nursing student from the same school at the facility this year.
Reacting, the hospital management said an investigation was ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding Godwin’s death at its General Medical Practice Unit. “We recognise the profound grief and distress this unfortunate incident has caused and extend our sincere sympathies to all those affected,” the statement read. The management assured students, staff and members of the public that the investigation would be expedited and conducted thoroughly, impartially and transparently in line with established procedures.
It added that necessary steps would be taken to establish the facts, address any issues identified and ensure accountability. “We further assure all concerned that every necessary step will be taken to establish the facts, address any issues identified, and ensure that justice is served. The hospital will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities and stakeholders as required,” the statement added.
The hospital urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed without prejudice to its findings. It also reaffirmed its commitment to patient safety, professional accountability and maintaining high standards of care. The management concluded by praying for strength for the bereaved family, friends and colleagues, and for the deceased to rest in peace.
