Rice From Gutters, Fuel From Tankers: The Alarming Reality of Hardship in Nigeria
This is becoming a pattern.
Yesterday at Ring Road, Benin City, residents were seen scooping rice from muddy, dirty water after it spilled onto the street and was reportedly abandoned by its owner.
A woman behind the camera could be heard expressing shock at the sight, lamenting the hardship that has pushed people into collecting food from such an unhygienic environment just to survive. She also called for President Bola Tinubu to leave office, saying, “Tinubu must go!”
Just two days earlier, in Oluku, along the Benin-Lagos Highway, people rushed to scoop fuel from a fallen tanker. Hours later, the tanker exploded, claiming lives, including that of a soldier, while several others sustained severe burns. Shops and vehicles were also caught in the inferno.
A day before that, in Lagos, a tanker carrying groundnut oil overturned at Ojota along Ikorodu Road. People were seen scooping the spilled oil while officials watched. LASTMA subsequently issued a public health warning because the oil had mixed with road debris and dirty water.
Rice from muddy streets. Fuel from a fallen tanker that later exploded. Contaminated cooking oil collected from an expressway.
These incidents raise serious concerns about the level of hardship and desperation in the country.
This is not simply about people trying to make ends meet. It is about a situation where the struggle to survive can push people into taking risks with their health and safety.
When people begin collecting food from gutters and rushing towards fallen fuel tankers, the problem goes beyond the spilled products. It raises questions about poverty, the rising cost of living and the difficult choices many Nigerians face daily.
The tragic tanker explosion in Oluku is a painful reminder that such desperate actions can have devastating consequences.
When scooping spilled goods from the streets becomes a recurring sight, Nigerians are left asking a bigger question: how did survival become this difficult?
