Anthropology Of Hospitality

01

Anthropology of hospitality - in anthropology, hospitality has been analyzed as an unequal relation between hosts and guests, mediated through various forms of exchange. Jacques Derrida offers a model to understand hospitality that divides unconditional hospitality from conditional hospitality. Over the centuries, philosophers have considered the problem of hospitality. To Derrida, there is an implicit hostility in hospitality, as it requires treating a person as a stranger, distancing them from oneself; Derrida labels this intrinsic conflict with the portmanteau "hostipitality".

Yes - as Africans, we didn't have a written culture originally (I mean black native Africa, not Egyptians - please let's not digress). Our records and documentaries were oratory. To prove your ancestral lineage or family deeds, you would have to memorize and recite some words and sentences. It is in our DNA and it was kind of the Facebook or Google or even AI of those days.

This one dey pain my heart small anytime I hear am. I've come across so many cases where people bought land from someone they "know well" — maybe a family friend, church member, or someone from their hometown — and because of that familiarity, they skipped the normal checks. No Ministry of Lands search, no proper documentation review, nothing.

I used to think that once I pay for land and collect my receipt, that land is 100% mine. Turns out, that's not how it legally works in Nigeria, and I think more people need to know this. Under the Land Use Act of 1978, all land in Nigeria is actually vested in the Governor of each state.

Prices have moved so much this year that what I paid for cement in Enugu last month is probably useless info in Lagos or PH. Wanted to start a thread where people just drop what they're currently paying, by state — could help a lot of people planning to build.

First off, stereotypes are what they are - just stereotypes. They're not facts and do not always represent the truth of a people in question. But let's have some laughs and just share some funny stereotypes about gurls and guys in our tribe. I'll go first: I'm from Benin. 1. E nor get Benin boy wey nor dey curse Ogun.

Some of these cultural practices during burials need to be stopped - they are just exploiting people. During my father-in-law's burial in Idoma land, the daughters-in-law were asked to buy soap and Vaseline for all the women in the family, apart from the goats and plenty of food they must bring.
