He Thought He Was Loved… Until He Realized He Was Just Useful.
He Thought He Was Loved… Until He Realized He Was Just Useful.
Yesterday I sat down with a friend of mine, just talking about life the way friends do. In the middle of the conversation, he said something that stayed with me long after we had finished talking.
He said, “People always talk about men hurting women, but nobody talks about what it feels like when a man realizes he was just being used.”
I didn’t interrupt him. I just listened.
He told me about a woman who came into his life like peace. The kind of person who makes you feel like you finally met someone who understands you. She called him when she needed comfort. She leaned on him when life became heavy. She shared her problems, her fears, and her struggles with him.
And like many men who genuinely care, he showed up.
He supported her emotionally.
He defended her when others questioned her intentions.
Sometimes he even spent his time and resources just trying to make life easier for her.
To him, it felt like love. Like they were building something real.
But slowly, he started noticing something.
Whenever he needed her, she was suddenly unavailable.
Whenever he tried to express how he felt, the conversation somehow turned into him apologizing.
Whenever he questioned certain things, she twisted the story until he felt guilty for even asking.
It took him time to see it clearly.
Because manipulation rarely shows up looking like manipulation. Sometimes it hides behind sweet words, tears, and the promise of affection.
Then one day it finally hit him.
He wasn’t loved.
He was useful.
Useful when she was lonely.
Useful when she needed help.
Useful when life wasn’t going her way.
But not important enough to be there when he needed the same support in return.
And the scariest thing about manipulation is this:
the person being used believes they are building something real… until the day they realize they were only being managed.
We sat quietly for a moment after he finished talking.
Then he said something else that made me think even deeper.
“Maybe the real problem isn’t that manipulation exists. The problem is that when it happens to men, nobody wants to talk about it.”
But let's be honest, does manipulation really have a gender?”
