THINGS I WISH SOMEONE TOLD ME BEFORE MARRIAGE 😂😂
This is for those planning to marry, those who just got married, and those already married but still behaving like they are on probation. 😂
If you are open-minded, read. Nobody knows it all. Even Google still asks, “Did you mean…?” 😂
- GET HEALTH INSURANCE.
Immediately you get married, even before baby enters the WhatsApp group, register your family for health insurance.
NHIS and other health insurance options can save you serious money depending on your plan and provider.
Because hospital bills can humble a fully grown adult. 😭
My friend once did an operation and paid around ₦10k because of his coverage. Something that could have swallowed ₦400k!
Please, don't wait until somebody is lying on the hospital bed before everybody starts shouting:
"God will provide."
God can provide AND you can have insurance. 😂
- HAVE A FAMILY DOCTOR.
Very, very important.
You don't necessarily need a doctor living in your compound. 😂
But have a trusted doctor or healthcare professional you can call when something happens.
Especially when you start having children.
Because children have one special talent:
They can be perfectly fine at 10pm and start coughing like a generator at 1am. 😭😂
- HAVE A FAMILY LAWYER.
Yes, lawyer.
Not only when somebody wants to sue you. 😂
A good family lawyer can save you from making expensive mistakes.
Recently, our family lawyer helped us recover over ₦500k in rent that I was almost ready to wave goodbye to.
I had already mentally buried the money. 😂
She stepped in, did her job and the money came back.
Lawyer: 1 My foolishness: 0. 😂
- IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT, GET DOMESTIC HELP.
My brother, _ejiro kwa afufu anya isi._ 😂
Marriage is not a competition to see who can wash the most plates.
If you can afford someone to help with cleaning, laundry, cooking or other housework, get help.
There is no award waiting for you because you personally washed 47 plates while carrying a crying baby. 😭
Rest.
Your back is not a government project.
- BUY THINGS IN BULK.
Toothpaste.
Soap.
Toilet paper.
Detergent.
Diapers.
Whatever you regularly use and can safely store.
Buying things little by little can quietly eat your money.
One day you'll calculate everything and discover that Mr. “I only bought small things” has spent ₦80k. 😂
This is actually one reason I created my sharing platform—to help families buy/share things around common goals.
Some of you reading this are already there.
If we can share knowledge, why not share the economy too? 😂
- PAY SCHOOL FEES BEFORE RESUMPTION IF YOU CAN.
Please.
Don't wait until the night before resumption when every parent has suddenly remembered that children go to school. 😂
If you can afford it, pay early.
As I'm talking to you, I've already sent SGM the children's school fees that will be paid in September.
Once it's sorted, my blood pressure can continue its peaceful journey. 😂
Because when school fees money is still sitting in your account, it has a way of developing legs.
One emergency here.
One family request there.
One “please help me with ₦20k”...
Before you know it:
School fees: ₦0 You: “Jesus, take the wheel.” 😭😂
- HAVE PASSIVE INCOME.
Please, strive to have something that can generate money without you physically working every single minute.
Even if it's ₦3k–₦5k daily or whatever amount is realistic for you.
Because depending on only one salary in this economy is like entering a canoe and praying the Atlantic behaves itself. 😂
Have another stream if you can.
Small-small is still something.
- PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CHILDREN'S FRIENDS AND SCHOOL.
This one is VERY important.
The school your child attends can influence the people they meet, their environment, exposure and sometimes their mindset.
I'm not saying you must carry your child to the most expensive school in Nigeria and start eating garri till graduation. 😂
But if you can afford a good school, prioritize it.
Because sometimes the school fees you're complaining about today are actually an investment in the people your child will call friends tomorrow.
- HAVE FAMILY MEETINGS.
I learnt this from my dad.
You, your wife, your children—even if they are still small.
Sit down and talk.
Discuss problems.
Discuss solutions.
Discuss plans.
And please, let the children talk too.
Ask them: “ _Is there anything mummy and daddy are doing that you don't like_ ?”
You may be shocked by the answers. 😂
Child: “Daddy, I don't like when you shout.”
Daddy: “Okay.”
Child: “And mummy's food…”
Mummy: “Meeting adjourned.” 😭😭😂
Do the same with your spouse.
Ask what you can both do better.
Talk about the home.
Talk about money.
Talk about the children.
Talk about plans.
Talk about what is working and what isn't.
It doesn't have to be every week.
Monthly is fine.
Every six months is better than never.
Make it a family culture.
One day, the children will remember those moments.
And hopefully, they won't remember them as: “ _That meeting where Daddy talked for 3 hours and nobody was allowed to talk_ .” 😂
Everyone's opinion in the family matters.
And as the man, your responsibility is not to behave like the Supreme Court of the household. 😂
Listen to everyone, consider the opinions, then make the best decisions for the family.
And madam, you too can initiate the meeting o!
Marriage is teamwork.
Not: “ _Who is the CEO?”_
There is no perfect formula for marriage.
But these little things can save you plenty unnecessary stress, money and headaches. 👀😂
- Once they your kids are born open an email for them where you store all their pictures (you will understand this years later)
Good morning, and enjoy your weekend! ❤️
