Nigerian and Ghanaian teachers hoping to qualify to teach in England through the direct overseas Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) application route have been hit by a major rule change.
According to Business Insider Africa, England has stopped teachers trained in Nigeria, Ghana and India from using the direct “Apply for QTS in England” service under the new rules. Nigeria and Ghana reportedly accounted for 2,143 QTS applications during the 2024/25 academic year.
The change, however, does not mean Nigerian or Ghanaian teachers have been banned from teaching in England. Other routes to QTS remain available, including assessment-only QTS, teacher training in England and iQTS. Eligible overseas-trained teachers may also be able to teach in England without QTS for a limited period, subject to the relevant requirements.
For Nigerians who have been planning to relocate to the UK through teaching, this could make the process more complicated.
Do you think these tighter requirements are reasonable verification measures, or another hurdle for foreign professionals trying to work in the UK?
